The cloud migration challenges you should be aware of

The most important thing before and during cloud migration is to understand the difficulties that you may face on the way. Here are the main pitfalls to consider.
The cost of migration

In the long run, migrating to the cloud pays off, but in the short term, you need to be confident that you can afford it. The most costly parts of the cloud migration process are developing app architecture, investing in tools and staff training, bandwidth costs and possible downtime issues.

Not involving business users in the process

Without considering the views of the business users on merging, cleaning, or restructuring the data they work with every day, business users can misapply data or overburden IT services with post-migration support requests. Engage end-users of your systems and products early on. This will save you from costly changes in the future.

Cloud provider lock-in

The problem is that there are no universal standards between providers: no standards for how data is stored, protected, and moved. This can create confusion if you want to move to another cloud provider that uses a different storage standard. Businesses should consider how cloud services store their data in advance.

Lack of qualified management and engineers

Moving from an utterly on-premises organization to any cloud model requires adapting a new skill set. It can range from purely technical to more business and management-related skills. The transition will allow IT teams to spend less time on maintenance and operations, but it first requires qualified personnel to be deployed.

What are the prerequisites for cloud migration?plus
We recommend that you begin by choosing your level of cloud integration, decide on single or multi-cloud infrastructure, and establish performance baselines. However, if you are capable of doing all of this, you hardly need to go to someone for advice. Therefore, here is a brief list for simplifying the process.First, you must have something to migrate, i.e., a working product/service. It may use on-premise infrastructure or be deployed in the cloud (in case you want to migrate to another cloud provider) - it doesn’t matter.Second, you must have a high level of understanding of the goals and business objectives that you plan to achieve with your migration. The clearer you see your goals, the easier it will be for us to choose the most correct strategy for achieving them.Third, there should be a person on your team who is responsible for the migration project in its entirety. It doesn't have to be a technician, but someone with sufficient authority and access to all of the decision-making centers for your team. Finally, you should have a rough idea of the budget that you are willing to spend on your migration. We will, of course, adjust these numbers, but we need to know your expectations.

What are cloud migration techniques?plus
The methods you intend to use to migrate to the cloud are solely defined by the type of cloud service you intend to migrate to:
  • Public cloud. The benefits of a public cloud cover 24/7 uptime, charging only for what you use, easy scalability, and simple infrastructure maintenance (as it is carried out by the provider). This is the most common type of cloud deployment where a couple of certified cloud engineers can solve almost any issue for you with relative ease.
  • Private cloud. Here cloud resources are used and owned solely by one organization. A private cloud is the best option for government institutions and companies with strict customization and security requirements. Migration to a private cloud, if hosted by a remote provider, is no different from migrating to the public cloud. But maintenance and costs may differ.
  • Hybrid cloud. This approach combines public and private cloud deployment in one system. This method may be useful for companies that want to combine strict security, powerful customization, and scalability of the private cloud. It may also require on-site hardware deployment and is much more expensive in terms of development and maintenance. A skillful DevOps team is required.
  • Multi-cloud. Can be a mix of private and public cloud infrastructure as well as strict public cloud deployment on multiple cloud platforms. In this case, a company enjoys additional protection against server crashes from one provider and can keep its service up and running at the expense of another provider. You will need specialists certified to work on several platforms and additional costs for the migration of services and their adaptation to the different requirements of separate providers.
